Identification of a new pathogen causing tobacco spot blight in Guangxi

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), which creates jobs for 33 million people and contributes two trillion dollars’ tax annually, is one of the most important economic plants globally. However, tobacco is seriously threatened by numerous diseases during production. Previously, the field survey of tobacco diseases was conducted in the Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, the two main tobacco-producing areas in China. A serious leaf spot disease, with a 22% to 35% incidence, was observed in farming plants. In order to determine the causal agents, we collected the disease samples and isola

Comprehensive evaluation of chemical quality of flue-cured tobacco based on improved TOPSIS method

In order to improve the scientific and rationality of power quality (PQ) comprehensive evaluation, an improved Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) strategy in consideration of the correlation between indices is proposed to evaluate PQ. The strategy overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional methods that ignore the correlation between PQ performance parameters. Firstly, the AHP-entropy weight (EW) method is obtained by combining the improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the EW method, and the combined weights of the PQ indices are calculated.

Inactivation mechanism of tobacco mosaic virus with composite sodium chlorite

Using half-leaf method O,O′-diisopropyl (3-(L-1-(benzylamino)-1-oxo-3- phenylpropan-2-yl)thioureido)(phenyl)methyl phosphonate (2009104) was studied for its activity on tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). It showed good curative activity in vivo and the curative activity at 500 μg/mL was found to be 53.3%. In vivo treatment with the control agent Ningnanmycin at 500 μg/mL resulted in 51.2% inhibition and curative inhibition rates respectively. Dot-ELISA test was employed to verify the efficacy of activity of compound 200910 for anti-TMV activity. The mechanism of action of comp

A rapid detection method for moisture content in cured tobacco based on drying kinetics

The effects of air temperature and relative humidity (RH) on the drying kinetics of two flue-cured tobaccos (C3F and B3F) were studied with a thermogravimetric device for drying analysis in this work. The drying experiments were carried out with the drying air temperature of 60℃, 70℃, 80℃ and 90℃ and the RH of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% at a constant airflow. A modified Arrhenius-type equation of diffusivity considering the effect of RH was proposed. By comparison with five thin-layer drying models and five equilibrium moisture content models to describe the drying kinetics of tobacc

Protoplast preparation of tobacco root cells

The cell wall, serving as the exoskeleton of plants, is naturally a barrier to resist external stresses. Protoplasts can be obtained by dissolving the cell walls of plant cells without damaging the cell membrane, and are widely used in the rapid propagation, transgenic breeding, and somatic hybridization of plants. However, to regenerate the cell wall is a precondition for cell division. Therefore, to study the culture condition and influencing factors during the cell wall regeneration of protoplasts is vital. Traditionally, culture medium is used to cultivate protoplasts, but it has some d

Identification of microorganisms resulted mildew on Hainan cigar tobacco and their antagonistic strains' screening

The microbiological composition of tobacco products was studied using culture and chemical analysis (of tobacco leaves) or chemical analysis only (tobacco and tobacco smoke). The chemical analyses utilized gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for determining 3-hydroxy fatty acids, muramic acid, and ergosterol as markers of respectively lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan, and fungal biomass. Mesophilic bacteria dominated in both fresh and cured tobacco leaves; a range of additional bacteria and fungi were also found albeit in minor amounts. The peptidoglycan and LPS concentration

Influence of packing density in cases on cut tobacco quality during off-site delivery

Cigarettes with reduced circumference are increasingly popular in some countries, hence it is important to understand the effects of circumference reduction on their burning behaviour, smoke chemistry and bioactivity. Reducing circumference reduces tobacco mass burn rate, puff count and static burn time, and increases draw resistance and rod length burned during puff and smoulder periods. Smoulder temperature increases with decreasing circumference, but with no discernible effect on cigarette ignition propensity during a standard test. At constant packing density, mainstream (MS) and sidest
